Lore

The story of Aion is rich and diverse, stretching back thousands of years to the creation and subsequent shattering of Atreia to the present day.

I would know because I have seen it all unfold before my very eyes. For now you can simply refer to me as The Observer. I watched as the violent struggle unfolded and Atreia was torn apart. Who is to blame when it is all said and done? Inevitably, it depends on your point of view. The Asmodians and Elyseans have chosen to blame one another. While I, unburdened by association with either, seek to collect all that was once Atreia’s written history. I am neither Judge nor Jury, but maybe in my task the truth of the Cataclysm will be exposed.

Atreia Lore

There is nothing like the abuses of Time, Seclusion, and of course the small matter of my home being split into two, to force you to loose track of the important books of our world

P.C. (Pre-Cataclysm)

1.Daeva

Introduction

When the Balaur began to threaten the peace and stability of Atreia, Aion created the Daevas as protectors and guardians of the Humans and of the world. Daevas had the ability to tap into the Aether, the mystical force that filled Atreia, and to use it to channel great power.

They were led by the Twelve Empyrean Lords, the first and the most powerful among them, who are revered by Daevas and Humans as gods.

Daevas were created from Humans, and some Humans still transform into Daevas through the process of Ascension.

Military Structure

Each faction has a military made up of elite Daevas:

The Elyos have Guardians
The Asmodians have Archons

A Daeva’s Duty

A Daeva usually becomes a servant of the Empyrean Lord who granted the revelation of the Daeva’s power. Traditionally, Daevas do good deeds in their Lord’s name, earning the respect and glorification of the humans they defend, but they do not rule over the humans.

Daeva’s tend to live separate from the humans, in the capital city (either Pandaemonium or Sanctum), which is harder for humans to access. Some humans see this as arrogance and have begun to resent the Daevas, believing that the Daevas merely pay lip service to their duties, and prefer to live lives of ease and luxury in the beautiful capitals, while the humans eke out a living in the ravaged lands outside.

Human Birth and Growth

Humans make up most of the population of the world, and from their unions a very few heroes with special potential emerge and become Daevas. It is believed that a special sensitivity to Aether causes certain humans to Ascend, though it is impossible to predict which humans will be affected.

When this kind of special human appears, the local high priest will inform the patron Empyrean Lord of that village and ask for a revelation in order to prove divinity. If a fledgling Daeva overcomes all trials determined by the revelation, they are called before the Empyrean Lord to swear allegiance. In return, they are entitled to be an agent of the Lord’s position and authority.

Daeva Birth and Growth

One born of two Daeva parents may have the advantage of an upbringing among Daevas who have decades or centuries of experience. But, that does not mean that their abilities are greater than those of Daevas born of two Humans.

Empyrean Lords & Daevas

It is said that a Daeva born to a coupling between an Empyrean Lord and a Daeva has the potential to be the most powerful of all, but there are no known cases on record.

As for a Daeva coming from the coupling of two Empyrean Lords, there seems to be an unspoken rule that forbids it.

Death of a Daeva

While Daeva’s can experience enough damage to seperate the spirit from the body, Daevas are immortal and will always resurrect at the Obelisk where they are bound.

2.Empyrean Lords

The first Humans to Ascend into Daevas became the twelve Empyrean Lords. Each Lord or Lady is associated with certain symbols and virtues, and many of them are the patrons of particular playable classes. On an individual level their power is not necessarily greater than that of other Daevas, but their status as the first to Ascend grants them a special place in Daeva society, and they are revered by Humans as gods.

Four of the major Empyrean Lords represent the four cardinal directions--Azphel the north, Ariel the south, Siel the east, and Israphel the west--and they were traditionally perceived as supporting the world together from these four points, with the remaining eight Lords to aid them.

Historically, they were always disrupted by factional infighting, but during the Millennium War, Lord Israphel divided them further by proposing peace talks with the Balaur.

A.C. (After Cataclysm)

1.The Code of Lepharist Revolutionaries

Article 1
Our Goal is to construct a new paradise in Atreia. We call ourselves Lepharist Revolutionaries after the name of our leader, Lord Lephar.
Article 2
We believe that Atreia has become a chaotic society full of danger and discrimination, and that this is due to the incompetence of the Empyrean Lords.

Article 3
We believe that it’s the will of Aion that the 13th Empyrean Lord, a perfect being, will descend onto the world and create a perfect life in Atreia.
Article 4
We use any means necessary to accomplish this revolution and spread the word of Lephar to enlighten all people.
Article 5
We regard our actions as a first step in creating a new society and endeavor to be perfect Humans by continuously training, educating, and otherwise improving ourselves.

Article 6
We live with our comrades who share our love for the great cause of Lephar and always remember the noble attitude and magnanimous tolerance of the Lepharists.
Article 7
We will struggle continuously until we create a society in which all people are equal--just like Atreia before the Cataclysm.

2.A Perfect Human: Miracles of Honorable Lephar

Whoever sees honorable Lephar is surprised, as his face is as pure and innocent as a child’s.
His immaculate face with no trace of worldly cares and his generous bearing capture everyone’s heart. His words, however, are wiser than those of any sage, and his thunderous voice dictates to the world.
Honorable Lephar’s magnanimity and generosity are a paragon for those who struggle to take the right path at all times.

Unfortunately, few Lepharists have met honorable Lephar personally.
Honorable Lephar has never tarried in one place since he received the message that the Thirteenth Empyrean Lord would come to make a new world.
His Honor calls at every door in Atreia without cease, at all risks, in order to elucidate his vision of a new paradise and a perfect Human. Thanks to his grace, Lepharist Revolutionaries have grown influential in both Elysea and Asmodae and been able to act secretly in places the enemy could scarcely imagine.
Honorable Lephar has never forgotten you comrades and has met with each of you in a way you may not understand.

It is his belief that people need a savior who stands by them in times of need, not one who, like the Twelve Empyrean Lords, gives commands from faraway.
One night, not long ago, when the snow stormed all around Alquimia Stronghold, honorable Lephar visited you comrades. Yes, you. He came with stealthy steps so not to awaken you and looked carefully into every face while you slept fast and deep. He looked deep into your hearts and saw how passionately you perform your duties--honorable Lephar wore a broad smile on his face and was pleased.
Then, he raised his hand, piling up bread and meat enough to feed all of us, and left without a word.

All of you here were inspired to join the Lepharist Revolutionaries by the words Honorable Lephar spoke and taught.
However, such speech is only the beginning. It seems that most of you comrades still do not know about numerous wonders Honorable Lephar has performed. Thus, today I’d like to tell you of his miracles.
The first miracle happened in Altgard several decades ago. There were three sisters who lost their parents and had no relatives. On top of that misery, they were born crippled.
That they did not give up their lives despite such bitter trials is commendable, but they could hardly move on their own.

Honorable Lephar, who happened to pass nearby, heard the desperate cries of the poor girls. Without a word, he laid his thumb on their foreheads, and in a heartbeat, they stood and walked.
Those girls joined the Lepharist Revolutionaries that day. Each rose to a high rank and all now work vigorously for His Honor’s cause.
Another story is about an administration officer who was expelled under a false accusation from Pandaemonium. Working as an administration officer all his life, he won official commendation many times for helping and encouraging Daevas with all his heart. He was so devoted to his work that he had no time to court a lady, to say nothing of marriage.

However, he had to leave Pandaemonium in dishonor after being falsely accused of embezzling. His self-sacrifice didn’t save him. Dishonorably discharged, he lost all will to live and spent every day in sorrow. He tortured himself by repeatedly jumping off a cliff without spreading his wings. Then Honorable Lephar found him.
Honorable Lephar immediately understood all his anger and mortification. His honor spoke only one sentence:
"You are innocent."
The former administration officer burst into tears, washing away his sorrow. Right then, he joined the Lepharists.

As the Revolution has rapidly spread through the lands, some Daevas of Asmodae started to oppose Honorable Lephar. They devised a dishonorable trick. They had a plan to scar our noble cause.
They sent Daevas who disguised themselves as Honorable Lephar to every corner of Asmodae. The vicious Daevas committed all sorts of atrocities. People began to point the finger of blame at Lepharist Revolutionaries. Our comrades came to a decision.
After a long pursuit, our comrades captured one who impersonated Honorable Lephar and brought him to kneel before Lephar himself.

The man confessed to Honorable Lephar that he was a spy sent by Pandaemonium. As the truth revealed itself, all the comrades closed their eyes.
However, nothing happened like they expected.
They opened their eyes after a long moment and watched as Honorable Lephar, without a word of blame, erased each terrible memory from the mind of the captive. At that moment, all found great illumination.
Honorable Lephar is a perfect man who shall work for the real will of Aion.

Races

The world of Atreia is inhabited by two playable factions, the Asmodians and the Elyos, along with a third non-playable faction (the Balaur):

  • The Asmodians: The Asmodians are a brave and hardy people, separated from the Elyos by the Epic Cataclysm and plunged into a world of darkness and despair.
  • The Elyos: The Elyos occupy the lower half of Atreia, known as Elysea. After the Epic Cataclysm, they found themselves bathed in sunlight for over 750 years and, as a result, have transformed into a beautiful and radiant people.
  • The Balaur: The term “Balaur” invokes images of terror and fear for the level of destruction that they caused, and continue to cause, in Atreia.

Classes

There are four primary classes that players can select from when they create a new character: WarriorScout, Mage and Priest. Once you have gained enough experience, you will be able to Ascend to one of the two specialized classes available to your primary class.

The Warrior

Fearsome and hulking, a Warrior’s way is found more through brute force and great resilience than guile and trickery. However, do not be fooled into thinking that Warriors are brainless or simple-minded. A Warrior bears the brunt of the attack and can reply with tremendous force and power. Do not fail to appreciate what these soldiers can do for you or your group.

Once a warrior completes its acension quest it will be able to wear plate armor after choosing to become one of the following subclasses:

Templar
Calling the Templar a maestro of defense wouldn’t be far from the truth, but one shouldn’t mistake its only purpose: to be an Atreian punching bag. With their high defense and various shield skills, Templars can also inflict some serious damage on their opponents. Depending on the situation, a Templar can swap a sword or mace (and shield) for a greatsword. While its ability to deal damage may be lower when compared to other classes, it would be unwise to ignore the Templar’s powerful attacks.

Gladiator
Gladiators are Daevas who follow the Star of the Sword. They expertly wield most melee weapons and are especially proficient using polearms. Their ultimate goal is to obtain a variety of battle skills according to each weapon’s properties. However, rather than flamboyant techniques or tricks, they prefer to attack the enemy with power and accuracy. Therefore, Gladiators reveal their true value in close combat. They also perform crucial roles in most legions.

The Scout

If the Warrior is about grit, power and sheer strength, then the Scout concerns itself more with speed, agility and awareness. Scouts are complex men and women that require a delicate touch and measured approach. Once they learn their inherent strengths and weaknesses, Scouts can become formidable opponents.

Although leather armor does not mitigate damage well, the Scout’s ability to evade most attacks makes them hard to hit and allows them to strike back with devastating counterattacks.

Assassin

The Assassin is a Daeva killing specialist that follows the Star of Death. After hiding itself, an Assassin quietly approaches its enemy and aims for vital spots to inflict great amounts of damage instantly. This is one of the Assassin’s trademark combat skills. Some of the Daeva have criticized them for ambushing defenseless enemies or using poisoned blades. However, the Assassin is necessary in the legions for its battlefield roles of infiltration, disruption, assassination, and more.

Ranger

A Ranger is a Daeva with exceptional archery skills. Not only can a Ranger expertly wield a bow, but can make good use of a sword and dagger for close combat. The Ranger is also a master with various traps, making it both a formidable opponent on its own and a valued member of any group. Being skilled in both short and long range attacks combined with the ability to manipulate traps makes the Ranger able to adapt easily to nearly any situation. However, arrows and especially trap ingredients can become costly, making the Ranger one of the more expensive classes.

The Mage

A Mage, while incredibly powerful, can be exceptionally vulnerable. They are able to deal out terrifying, awe-inspiring levels of damage at range, while taking little in return. Mages have command over the elements, summoning raging fireballs and chains of the coldest ice to wreak havoc over ranks of the enemy. They can even speak to the shattered planet, calling forth roots to bind enemies in place.

The mage comes equipped with cloth armor, and while not very resilient, it allows the caster the ability to move around the battlefield casting spells that slow and, in some cases, even stop their opponents in their tracks. This gives them the opportunity to unload with spells that deal immense amounts of damage to their opponents.

Sorcerer

The Sorcerer is a Daeva who follows the Star of Magic. They are able to freely wield the destructive power of the natural elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. A Sorcerer is a scholar at heart, evident by the spellbooks and orbs they normally carry with them. However, these items can be dangerous weapons in their hands as they help increase a Sorcerer’s power.

Spiritmaster

The Spiritmaster is a Daeva born under the Star of Spirits, and is able to control spirits of Water, Fire, Earth, and Wind. It can call upon these spirits to attack directly, but it can also use indirect tactics such as borrowing the strength of the spirits to weaken an enemy or to inflict fear.

The Priest

Finally, the Priest is arguably the backbone of any successful group. Their ability to keep allies alive even in the direst of circumstances cannot be underestimated, and Priests can be absolutely vital in ensuring groups survive against the most pressing challenges in Atreia. Who would go into battle without a trustworthy Priest by their side?

However, do not mistake the Priest’s ability to heal for a lack of offense. While their offensive spells and melee attacks each may lack compared to other classes, the combination of the two and the ability to heal make the Priest a resilient and effective combatant.

Chanter

The Chanter can be explained in two words: commandment and conviction. It rigorously trains the body and mind to become skillful in healing, attacking, and enhancement magic. In addition to its magical abilities, it also possesses exceptional skills involving the use of the staff. The chanter uses mantra magic to inspire the morale of allies, and since it can strengthen abilities, it is the gathering center during battle.

Cleric

The Cleric is a Daeva who follows the Star of Healing. It uses magic power to strengthen the body and to heal injuries. It can also restore life by using a revival spell when a Daeva’s soul and body are separated. In addition to supporting its allies, it is also capable of wielding a mace and shield when a melee battle occurs.
